Ecological awareness and environmental themes are often noted in writing on the mangaka Osamu Tezuka (1928-1989), but there is still no comprehensive study of the concept of nature in his work. This paper explores environmental content in Tezuka’s work, focusing on his treatment of contemporary reality, and assessing his contribution to toxic discourse in realist fiction and science fiction, and to changing attitudes towards war and environmental protection
