Author Biography

Richard Pickard, University of Victoria

Richard Pickard is a Senior Instructor in the Department of English, University of Victoria, in Canada. His doctoral study focused on ideas of nature in 18th-century British literature, following the lead and example of Jonathan Bate's Romantic Ecology. At UVic, he teaches courses in composition and in the environmental humanities. He has supervised several ecocritical student projects at the MA and Honours BA level, on such topics as Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy; representations of urban geography of North America's West Coast; and wilderness survival narratives. His current research looks at the various contemporary and historical discourses around the BC forest industry, including in fiction, with particular reference to climate change and conservation.
