Thijs Biersteker , Artist

Ecological artist Thijs Biersteker collaborates with leading scientists to create eco data-driven artworks that translate complex scientific environmental research into immersive installations and experiences. His works have been exhibited in museums and presented at conferences worldwide. His fluid blend of AI, sensors, and large datasets with kinetic engines, delicate mycelium, and ocean plastics create a unique synergy between the worlds of art and science. He is also the founder of Woven, where he and his team unite art and science under one mission: to make complex environmental issues accessible, understandable, and personal, ensuring that science reaches both the heads of state and the hearts of the public. The Woven Foundation supports NGOs and scientists in combining art and science to amplify the impact of their work in both policy and the public domain. At the Woven Studio, the team brings this mission to life by merging scientific data with cutting-edge technology and sustainable materials, creating data physicalisations that make science tangible. All of the work is rooted in scientific collaboration with partners like UNESCO, WHO, LVMH,  Ruinart, Polestar, Natural History Museum London, and many others. Their projects have been exhibited at institutions such as the Fondation Cartier (FR), the Barbican Centre (UK), and the Stedelijk Museum (NL), Art Basel (CH), Tefaf (NL), and featured on global platforms including COP, the United Nations, and the Montreux Jazz Festival. Thijs has delivered three TED Talks, given a keynote at the UN, and serves as a World Economic Forum Cultural Leader, where he advocates for new ways of communicating science through interactive experiences. Woven’s work is increasingly recognised for redefining the boundaries of art–science communication and for inspiring a new generation of impactful science communicators.
