Qian Liu, University of Michigan

Qian Liu holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Michigan and is an Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at the Ohio State University. He works on contemporary Italian literature and culture, urban and environmental humanities, migration and African diaspora studies, and Mediterranean studies. Currently, he is preparing for two manuscripts, “Urban Exergue: Black Spectrality and the Poetics of Landscape in Contemporary Italy,” and “Foundations of Displacement: Water, Media, and the Italian Mediterranean.” His writings have appeared in Forum Italicum, Italian Studies, Modern Italy, Altreitalie, and Annali d’Italianistica, among other venues.

Paolo Peng Shuai is a multidisciplinary artist based in Milan, Italy. Born in Xiangtan, China, he immigrated to Italy at nine. He holds a BFA with honors and an MFA with honors from the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, Milan. A recurring theme in Paolo’s artworks is the world of Chinese plants, symbolically intertwined with his diasporic identities. In 2019, Paolo Peng Shuai co-founded the art collective ALSO in Milan. In 2020, he curated Urban Fringe, an exhibition in his studio – the first in Italy dedicated to migrant artists of Chinese origin. He is also the co-founder of Culture-Dish, a contemporary art platform fostering intersections and dialogues among multiple cultures.
