Associate professor in the Dept. of English at the University of Tromsø, Norway. Werner Bigell wrote his doctoral dissertation about the American writer Edward Abbey. In the last years his research interest has moved towards the tangible aspects of the environmental humanities, landscape and community, the anti-landscape, city gardens (such as German allotment gardens), alternative communities, Norwegian outdoor life ("friluftsliv"), the experience of beauty, and intercultural differences in the use and perception of nature.
