Jan Martin, Freelance artist and writer

Jan Martin is a freelance illustrator/artist and writer living and working in Somerset, UK. Jan's skills lie in digital image manipulation and she works mainly in Photoshop. She loves experimenting with textures and effects, using both photographic and self-generated material to create a bizarre, sometimes surreal world of unexpected juxtapositions and perspectives that can surprise, disturb and illuminate. Her early illustration career was mainly in editorial illustration for publications such as The Times, The Guardian and The Independent, and after studying for her Masters in Printmaking went on to produce work for exhibition and private commission. Jan is also a writer. She has written and illustrated two children's books, and has published three books of poetry inspired by the landscapes and history of West Somerset—particularly the areas around the ancient harbour town of Watchet where she has lived for the past eight years. The landscapes along the Bristol Channel coast, and inland in areas such as the Quantocks, have inspired her recent publications We Are Here Between, Behind the Veil and Woods, Ways and Waters—three volumes of illustrated poetry that she wrote, illustrated and designed, and which indulge her love of the area and its stories. Jan has been Shortlisted for: The Exmoor Society Poetry Prize 2019; The Burnham Book Festival Poetry Prize 2023; The Walk.Listen.Create Poetry Prize 2023, and gained Highly Recommended in the Burnham Book Festival Short Story Prize 2023. Her work appears in various print and online platforms.
