Michael Maarten Markwick, webmaster of the easlce.eu and contributing artist to ecozona

Michael Markwick is an American-Dutch a painter, draftsman, and printmaker based in Berlin, Germany, and The Hague, the Netherlands. He was awarded a BFA from Calvin College (Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA) in 1998, and an MFA from Indiana University (Bloomington, Indiana, USA) in 2002.

Markwick has exhibited internationally in group and solo exhibitions at Galerie In Vorm, Belgium; The Autocenter Berlin, Germany; the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica, Venice, Italy; and The Gemeentemuseum of the Hague, De Veemvloer in Amsterdam, Gallery Tanya Rumpff in Haarlem, and the Dordrechts Museum, all in The Netherlands, amongst many other leading contemporary art centers, galleries, and alternative spaces in the EU.

Markwick is recipient of several awards, residencies, and grants, and was twice awarded the highly competitive and prestigious Basisstipendium by the Mondriaan Fund, The Netherlands (2006 & 2011). He has been nominated for two of Europe's leading painting prizes: The Netherlands Royal Painting Prize in 2006 and The Wim Izaks Prize in 2008. His work resides in many private and corporate collections in the EU, North America, and Asia, including the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp, Belgium; The Frans Masereel Centrum, Belgium; and the Hong Kong Open Printshop, Hong Kong. He has been an artist in residence at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in Venice, Italy; The Dordrechts Museum, The Netherlands; The Amsterdam Grafische Atelier, The Netherlands; and the Kunstfabrik Am Flutgraben, Berlin, Germany.

Markwick's work explores the phenomenology of nature and the relationship between abstraction and figuration. His paintings reflect the mix of local topographies: wetlands, trailer parks, and forests, and current energy of urban centers and their darker surrounding forests. The work ranges from intimate, small paintings and drawings to large-scale dynamic works where contrasts of luminous color push against muted tones, creating tension-filled images with apocalyptic undercurrents. The works explore a sense of place through the interaction of the painting process, memory, and imagination.
