Professor of English specializing in the English Renaissance. Author of Frnaics Bacon and Modernity (Yale 1986, Fischer 1989), Early Responses to Renaissance Drama (Cambridge 2006, winner of the Elizabeth Dietz Award for the best book in early modern studies, 2008), "Dekker’s and Middleton’s Plague Pamphlets as Environmental Literature" in Representing the Plague in Early Modern England, ed. Rebecca Totaro and Ernest Gilman (Routledge 2010), and ecocritical conference papers on Bacon's New Atlantis (2009) and Shakespeare's Hamlet (2010).  Member ASLE.
