Abstract

This paper proposes a (re)reading of Christa Wolf’s Störfall. Nachrichten eines Tages (1987) through the lens of eco-crip theory, focusing on how the text juxtaposes bodily illness and ecological disaster to challenge normative conceptions of health, temporality, and resilience. Written in the immediate aftermath of the Chornobyl catastrophe, Störfall records a single day in which two accidents occurred: the narrator’s brother undergoes brain surgery, while radioactive clouds spread across Europe. This temporal coincidence enables Wolf to trace a web of shared vulnerability between human and more-than-human bodies, exposing the porous boundaries between individual suffering and planetary crisis. The narrator’s reflections resist both medical  normalisation and state-sanctioned technocratic narratives, engaging instead in a form of eco-crip witnessing that affirms interdependence and care. Drawing on disability studies and post-Chornobyl environmental humanities, this paper argues that Störfall articulates a temporality of ‘crip latency'—a suspended time in which futures are uncertain, and bodies remain exposed to delayed, invisible harm. Wolf’s hybrid text—blending diary, reportage, and personal meditation—performs a cultural critique of Western ideals of control, productivity, and bodily integrity. It thus contributes to an eco-crip ethics that values fragility not as lack, but as a condition for alternative ways of inhabiting damaged worlds. In doing so, Störfall prefigures twenty-first-century discourses around environmental illness, slow violence, and toxic embodiment.
